Mosaic - "The City is Flourishing and Being Built" Bus Station - Chisinau

Mikhail Burya; Vladislav Andreevich Obukh1974/1975

Description

The mosaic The City is Flourishing and Being Built (“Orașul înflorește și se construiește”), completed in 1974 or 1975 by Mikhail Burya and Vladislav Andreevici Obukh for the Central Bus Station in Chișinău, covers the entire interior wall above the waiting hall. As the name implies, the mosaic shows an urban landscape under construction, including high-rise buildings, power plants, modernist structures, scaffolding, and cranes. Among them, figures appear in everyday poses. From left to right: a man and woman chatting in the street (the man holding a grocery bag), a construction site inspector, a welder, a woman looking down from the balcony, workers with tools, a man reading, couples walking, and a woman standing on a balcony, a group of people including a man holding a baby, a guy playing guitar for another man and a woman, a girl holding a balloon walking with her parents, and perhaps a woman and her child next to them (obscured by the hairdressers shop). Floating across the scene are large circular floral motifs, almost like bubbles. Their shades of yellow, ocher, green, and red contrast with the blues and greys of the city being built - while flourishing. These discs remind me of the mosaic “Greetings” outside Balti bus station constructed two years earlier. Online sources provide two conflicting artists (Obukh and Ivan Zagoretski), so given the similarity with the work here in Chisinau by Obukh, I assume Obukh designed the earlier work, rather than Zagoretski. The smalt tesserae remain in good condition.
