Mosaic - Moldtelecom - Chisinau
Mikhail Burya; Nicolae Cotofan — 1969
Description
The 1969 mosaic on the facade of the Moldtelecom building was originally created for the Moldavian SSR’s state telecommunications service under the Ministry of Communications of the USSR, predating Moldtelecom’s founding in 1993. The composition centres on communication as a unifying and progressive force. Earth dominates the centre and right half, with a red and white airplane cutting across the globe. A large hand holds two rotary dial telephones, with lines continuing and disappearing behind the globe before re-emerging in the top left of the world. A radiating sun motif projects red, yellow and white rays, intersecting the other elements. The materials appear to be smalt due to their irregular shapes and colors. The mosaic is mounted above eye level and partially obscured by the overhanging floor structure. Despite its height and exposure, the panel appears well preserved, with no major losses or fading.
