Moldtelecom (former Inter-city Telephone Exchange)
Victor Dubok — 1967
Description
Victor Dubok was chief architect of Giprosvyaz, the Union-wide communications enterprise, and brought the same approach to telephone exchanges in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Aktobe, and Vilnius before completing this one on Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard in 1967. Each of those buildings occupied a central position in its city, and the pattern was deliberate: the telephone exchange was a civic landmark, a visible sign that a city was connected to the wider world. The Chișinău building replaced a 1938 exchange by Constantin Nanescu that could no longer handle the volume of connections the republic required.
