Column of the 1770 Battle of Cahul
Bouffeau — 1849
Description
A 22m limestone triumphal column on a 5m pedestal, commemorating the 1770 Russian victory over the Ottomans in the Battle of Cahul. Features a metal cross and inverted crescent symbolizing triumph, the Rumiantsev family crest, the motto “Non Solum Armis”, and inscription marking Count Rumiantsev’s 17,000‑strong Russian force defeating 150,000 Ottoman troops. Designed by Bouffeau (plan by Francesco Boffo, built by Ippolit van‑der‑Schkruf). Completed in 1849 and designated as a national cultural heritage monument (ID: MD‑VL‑Is‑N‑0380). Though distinctly pre-Soviet, the column remains relevant as a reflection of Russia's continuous wars with the Ottoman Empiry and efforts for influence over what is now Moldova and the Balkans.
