WW2 Memorial - Hîrjău

Unknown1960s-1980s

Description

A Red Army soldier stands with head bowed, cap held in his left hand, greatcoat draped across his shoulder and a submachine gun at his side. the grey figure is set on a cylindrical pedestal in coarse pinkish aggregate render. Stars are common. A black plaque with red stars at its corners is inscribed Вечная память воинам, павшим в годы Великой Отечественной войны 1941-1945 годы, “Eternal memory to the soldiers who fell in the years of the Great Patriotic War, 1941-1945”, flanked by panels listing the dead. The pedestal rises from two large red-painted stars. Another star, the eternal flame, is is set into the paving in front with a burner at its centre. The memorial is of poor quality – the head and neck seem disproportionate from the body; the hands are oversized; the banner isn’t held up by anything.
