Description

This mosaic is installed on the side wall of the police station in Ungheni, Moldova Going from left to right, a male figure in traditional attire drinks reminds me of a shepherd calling to his animals. He holds a stick, though there are some abstract additions that make it look like an “A”. To his right, a seated, shirtless and muscular man operates a piece of machinery. With a visible crank and roller, it resembles a printing press or agricultural tool, though I posit it may be a textile-related instruments, as the woman to his right appears to be filling it with some kind of dye. This lady stands in a central arc formed by bands, one of which she holds with her right hand. Another female figure crouches and holds one of the curved black streams that “feeds” into the machine. The final figure is harvesting grapes and apples from within the central arcs. White and cream dominate the figures, while saturated primary colors and some green and black filling the abstract background. I’m impressed by the detailed work that went into the rugged black line over the yellow background. The black shadowing serves to bring out the figures more; I haven’t seen this kind of shading used before. No visible grout separation or paneling is present. The panel remains in good condition overall, though areas of tile loss are visible in the red and blue background fields near the top edge and base, with no current damage affecting the figures themselves.
