Mosaic - "TV Pavilion of Teleradio Moldova" - Chisinau
Aaron Startman; Dimitri Iancu — 1970
Description
The mosaic on the facade of the TV Pavilion of Teleradio Moldova in Chișinău shows a male figure with outstretched arms, as if pulling apart the clouds while rising through what resembles a TV screen with radiating beams in yellow. He recalls both a bearer of cosmic energy and an Atlas-like archetype. The vivid smalt tesserae in hues of blue and green are beautiful. The rugged, irregular pieces of smalt, whose size and shimmer are comparable to the Plowman of the Universe mosaic on the former Gagarin Youth Centre. This gives the surface a lively texture, especially under shifting daylight. The pavilion itself was part of the Telecenter complex, together with Moldova Film, conceived as a modernist hub of cultural and media facilities located not far from the TeleRadio-Moldova building hosting a mosaic and a panel, also in Chisinau’s Telecentru district. Despite the high-quality materials, the artwork shows signs of significant decay. The mosaic has lost significant sections of tesserae along bottom third, and the pieces are falling down from the beams and the male figure, making it more difficult to see the entire composition.
