Mosaic - Tiraspol

UnknownSocialist Modernist

Description

This large mosaic stands at the entrance of Tiraspol, Transnistria, applied to a freestanding wall. The composition unfolds as a continuous frieze, divided into thematic sections from left to right: science (a group holding tools and papers), agriculture (women in the centre, surrounded by vines, fruit and flowering plants, with a tractor emerging from the vegetation) and culture (a group of spectators watching a male and female dancer in motion, likely the Sârba or Sirba). Executed in factory-made ceramic tiles. The palette emphasizes primary colors and earth tones: deep greens, ochres, burgundy, pale yellow, and light blue. Comparatively, blues dominate the science segment, greens the agriculture, and yellows the culture. Grout joints are visible but narrow, and the surface appears well-maintained with minimal signs of weathering.
