Mosaic - Sport School No. 1 - Athletes - Cahul
Gheorghii Hadjioglov — 1989
Description
The mosaic on the facade of Sport School No. 1 in Cahul spans the full side wall of the building, presenting a densely packed composition of athletes. Created around 1989, possibly by visiting artists from Moscow according to someone we met passing by in Cahul. The mural is divided into five segments, four showing different sports: sprinting, wrestling, boxing, volleyball, football, cycling, and hockey, with the central fifth segment portraying a group of women with a victory laurel and fire and playing instruments. Figures are stylised with rounded forms and segmented limbs. The color palette uses primary and secondary colors in sharply contrasting blocks: yellow, red, green, blue, and orange, with white highlights. The tesserae are small and tightly set, with minimal grout lines, suggesting factory-cut ceramic. The condition is largely intact, though tiles are starting to fall off in the bottom right panels.
