Mosaic - "Peace, Science, Labor, Creativity, Art" Palace of Culture of the Iskozh Plant - Chisinau
Pavel Obuh — 1980
Description
"Мир, наука, труд, творчество, искусство" (Mosaic "Peace, Science, Labor, Creativity, Art") located above what is now a Mazda dealership. It used to be part of the Palace of Culture of the Izkosh plant The mosaic Мир, наука, труд, творчество, искусство (Peace, Science, Labor, Creativity, Art) decorates the facade of what was once the Palace of Culture of the Izkosh plant in Chișinău, now repurposed as a Mazda dealership. The Izkosh plant, or Завод «Искож», short for "Комбинат искусственных кож и резинотехнических изделий", was a Combine/Factory of Artificial Leather and Rubber-Technical Products. Extending across the wall, the composition unfolds in vertical bands of red and green tesserae, each hosting figures in muted colors engaged in cultural and intellectual pursuits. On the left, two seated figures appear with technical attributes, followed by a central section where a woman plays a harp and two figures stand beside an abstract form resembling a fabric roll. To the right, a group of musicians with guitar (he looks like one of the mustaches figures with long hair in the Cahul kindergarten), saxophone and drum embody artistic creativity. Inscriptions in Russian spell out the panel’s theme: Труд, Творчество, Искусство (“Labor, Creativity, Art”). On the top right, architectural fragments might reference the plant – though I’m uncertain of their symbolism. The mosaic is built from ceramic tesserae in subdued tones of red, pink, and green with some blue. The piece is in excellent condition.
