Mosaic - "Moldova" Palace of Culture - Rybnitsa
Mikhail Burya — 1972
Description
The mosaic “Moldova”, created in 1972 by Mikhail Burya for the facade of the Palace of Culture in Rybnitsa, Transnitria, stretches across the building’s front wall as a large-scale composition organized in narrative panels. Figures appear in a continuous sequence, their bodies rendered in simplified, geometric forms using warm tones of ochre, terracotta, and lavender or lilac (a color infrequently used on mosaics), contrasted with white, black, green, and blue panels. This is one of my favorite mosaics in Transnistria due to its colors and complexity. The center-left part of the panel represents science and technology, while the right tradition and culture and society. In the center, a group of men and women stand upright while one sits on some kind of wheeled chair, most raising their arms with gestures of determination. One carries a child, another holds large schematic drawing, another carries a mock-up of a power plant, while a woman inspects laboratory glassware. The left section displays industrial and scientific motifs: an atom in a hand, symbolizing mankind’s dominance over nuclear energy, and telecommunications structures. The right section presents symbolic forms: a stylized sun-like face with wheat-like hair, a hand holding grapes – juxtaposing the hand holding atomic energy, old traditions with new innovations, suggesting abundance in energy and food. The figures here represent the arts: weaving, painting, a man holding a book and singing or reciting poetry, a lady holding a violin. Ceramic tesserae, set into rectangular concrete panels with visible grid divisions make up the large mosaic, perhaps 15 meters wide. Due to its massive size, the mosaic appears to be in good condition, as one can easily make out the displays. However, closer inspection reveals many missing tiles.
