Mosaic - "Moldova" - Cahul
Unknown — 1970s
Description
The mosaic “Moldova”, created in the 1970s and installed on the facade of a residential building in Cahul, Moldova, presents a central female figure in a flowing robe, her arms extended. Green ribbons encircle her body. Around her, white peace doves and flatly rendered flowers in tones of ochre, white, pale pink, and brown scatter across vertical bands of muted blue, and gray tiles. The uniform tesserae are likely factory-made, perhaps from ceramics. Small white tesserae make up most doves, though in contrast, two in the middle are made up of larger pieces. Most interestingly for me are the tiles in the background in some of the blue vertical bands: they are either slightly raised, giving shadow play, or incorporate four triangles meeting in the middle. It gives a certain depth and textural complexity to the piece. The panel remains intact and in good condition, mounted directly onto the tiled wall surface of the apartment block. According to Mosaics of Moldova, “Moldova” holds official protected status as a cultural monument.
