Mosaic - Kolkhoz - Macaresti

This mosaic on the side of a former kolkhoz (collective farm) building in Măcărești presents a classic agricultural scene in Socialist Realist style: women and men harvesting fruit – likely apples. Behind them, a tractor driver appears seated in a comically sized tractor. Stylised fruit trees with red and orange spheres and dark branches fill the background at left. The color palette combines pale and dark blue fields with high-contrast black, brown, and red clothing. Grout lines are coarse and regular, and the tesserae vary in size, especially in the background sky and fields, where a scattering of light and dark blue fragments creates visual texture. I find the composition one hand quite complex, while on the other hand the composition creates quite jarring color contrasts with the blacks and browns in the figures’ clothing as well as in the stylised backgrounds with contrasting light and dark blues and white. The mosaic spans the full length of the end wall and remains in excellent condition. This shows that a piece of art doesn’t need to be protected by the government, as long as the building’s owner takes the necessary efforts.
