Mosaic - Kindergarten gymnasium S. Rachmaninoff - Cahul
Unknown — Socialist Modernist
Description
A fantastic large-scale mosaic decorates the facade of the "S. Rahmaninov" Gymnasium-Kindergarten in Cahul. Created in 1988 by an unknown author, the art depicts three female figures framed by flowing decorative elements. The central figure stands frontally holding a painter’s palette, flanked by two others in profile. Each figure – they remind me of the “muses” found elsewhere in Moldova - is rendered with elongated limbs, patterned garments, and simplified facial features. The beautiful mosaic uses a palette of ochre, beige, slate blue, muted gold, white, and black. Background elements consist of geometric stripes, arches, and floral motifs that echo Art Deco and earlier Soviet Avant Garde influences. We can also see grapes, sunflowers, and streaming water on the tiles. The tesserae are tightly set and uniformly cut, forming a precise and polished surface. The work is officially listed in the Public Monuments Register of the Cahul municipality and district with protected "B" status. Features on Cahul’s official website, the piece is preserved in good condition – though the school is looking worse for the wear.
