Description

This complexity of the scenes, the dynamism of the figures, and the placement on the cultural house in Cahul makes this one of my favorite mosaics in Moldova. The mosaic on the facade of the Luceafărul Children's Creative Center in Cahul spans the right side of the elongated building. It presents a continuous narrative sequence in five distinct scenes. The first shows armed partisans, some marching, others receiving weapons. The second depicts a group of figures gathered around a table, reading and writing, with books and documents spread across the surface and perhaps a globe in the centre. The third presents a group – villagers and soldiers – in festive embrace, two women holding bouquets. The fourth scene features a farewell kiss between a woman and a soldier, flanked by uniformed figures going off to war. The final panel shows several women and a few men gathered around a central woman holding an infant. Reds and greens dominate the artwork, with whites, blues and browns for contour and detail. Though it’s evidently in socialist realist, the mosaic work resembles more of a painting: simplified facial features, elongated limbs, and flowing garments emphasise dynamism, and the figures aren’t as muscular as the ideal homo sovieticus frequently portrayed in similar pieces. The mosaic uses dense grouting, likely cement-based, and is applied directly onto the concrete wall in a seamless panel. Tesserae appear to be factory-made ceramic pieces due to their consistent cuts and color saturation. It’s in a good state of preservation. Installed on a cultural institution originally established in 1941 as the Palatul Pionerilor and renamed multiple times before becoming the Luceafărul center in 2021.
