Ion Creanga State Pedagogical University
Nicolai Naumov — 1978
Description
Ten pairs of branching reinforced concrete supports raise the main building of the Ion Creangă State Pedagogical University off the ground on Ion Creangă Street, a structural device that makes the pilotis an integral part of the building's character rather than a purely formal gesture. Nicolay Naumov completed the eight-storey block in 1978. Four auditorium modules project outward from the lower portion of the main volume, their uplifted brutalist forms separated from the elevated rectangular body above by a continuous strip of windows. The same volumetric combination of expressive hall and rectangular administrative block was used by B. Shpak for the raion Party Committee buildings across the city's districts, though the university deploys it at greater complexity. The facade alternates rows of concrete panels with groups of four vertically aligned windows framed by deep profiles, their protruding edges casting strong shadow lines across the surface. Stairwell positions are readable from outside: a windowless vertical stripe on one side, a glazed segment on the other. A copper bas-relief portrait of the writer Ion Creangă, executed in a realistic style by sculptor V. Cuznetsov to a design by architect V. Cudinov, was installed on the facade in 1982. It sits visibly at odds with the building's architectural language. A post-2000 refurbishment replaced original facade elements with thermopane windows, reducing much of the building's textural character. The university, founded in 1940 and the oldest higher education institution in Chișinău, currently enrols approximately 6,000 students across nine departments.
