Chisinau Railway Station

Leonid Chiuprin 1948

Description

The railway station on Piața Gării Street stands on the foundations of Henrik von Lonsky's 1871 original, which was first restored in 1941 and then destroyed later in the war. Leonid Chiuprin rebuilt it from the ground up in 1948, with Alexei Shchusev serving as main consultant, and Shchusev's influence on the result is legible. The building mixes kokoshnik window frames drawn from northern Russian ecclesiastical architecture, red brick banding between pale stone courses, neo-Romanian sloping rooflines and arched openings, and socialist realist symbols including the Moldovan auroch, stars, grapes, and foliage in polychrome ceramic and concrete. Kokoshniki have been a feature of Russian Orthodox architecture since the sixteenth century; their presence here signals Shchusev's consistent affinity for ecclesiastical form. The interior retains its original decorative program: columns with capitals, suspended crystal lusters, and an elaborately finished upstairs waiting room. A complete refurbishment in 2003 relocated the ticket booths and restaurant, paved the platforms in stone, and added a new rail canopy. The square in front of the station, planned by David Palatnic and built between 1953 and 1957, replaced what had been a slum surrounding the old terminus of the horse-drawn konko tram. The ensemble includes a rectangular granite fountain plaza flanked by sandstone benches with stylised vases, and three- and four-storey residential buildings on three sides extending to Gagarin Boulevard. The 1955 austerity decree arrived mid-construction: the south side of the square was completed as designed, with full decorative detailing, while the opposite side was stripped of ornament entirely. The arched window frames on the residential facades were designed to echo the vaulted station entrance across the plaza. Together with the Cooperative Trade University and the Vibropribor plant building on Gagarin Boulevard, the Station Square ensemble forms one of the most compositionally coherent groupings of the postwar period in Chișinău.
