Bus Stop - Gotesti
Unknown — Socialist Modernist
Description
Located in Gotești, southern Moldova, this bus stop sits directly across from a village war memorial, positioned at the fork of a two-lane road. The structure is built from poured concrete and consists of a low, rectangular shelter with a steeply angled roof. A single central column, faced with white mosaic fragments, supports the overhang. The concrete is heavily worn, with spalling at the roof’s edges and water damage visible on the ceiling. The ground beneath is unpaved, and mud collects near the base of the structure. Mosaic panels decorate three of the shelter’s walls, dominated by large solar rosettes and sunflower-like motifs rendered in reds, oranges, yellows, white, and blues. The rosette designs recall pre-Christian (Dacian) solar symbols common in Romanian folk art, where they often appeared in textiles and church decorations. They also echo the importance of sunflowers as an agricultural staple. Simple, white and cream mosaics cover the supporting column. The mosaics appear to be constructed from standard colored tesserae set into medium grout. Some smaller sections are missing or damaged, but the main visual impact is the grime covering the panels.
