Bus Stop - Ghioltosu
Unknown — Socialist Modernist
Description
Located in Ghioltosu, a southwestern Moldova, this unique Soviet-era bus stop features a rectangular concrete shell with a deep roof overhang and full sidewalls. The front is open, framed by a thick lintel and flanked by two vertical mosaic panels. The mosaics are extensive and cover nearly every surface, including the roofline. The sidewalls and front panels are dominated by repeated stylized plant forms of wheat, rendered in pale white against rust-orange backgrounds. The plant motifs including cherries and wheat, continue on the side and read walls, set into a subdued palette of ochre, brown, cream, faded red, and black. The muted earth tones remind me of Yerevan. Heavy outlines and small grout lines provide a fuller visual. Curiously, 24 tubes protrude from the right side and eight from the left to provide light. The right wall recalls a stylized pomegranate or seed pod due to the protruding tubes. Though the mosaics remain mostly intact, some surfaces are darkened by grime, and sections of tile are beginning to come loose.
