Bus Stop - Goian / Ciorescu
Unknown — 1960s-1980s
Description
This bus stop, located near Goian and Ciorescu, is constructed from poured concrete, with a cantilevered roof formed by a large panel block and additional concrete elements attached on top. The walls and vertical supports enclose a partially sheltered waiting area with a bench. Overwhelmingly utilitarian in form, the structure is entirely covered in brightly colored mosaics. Unusually, these mosaics extend to the rear façade, which departs from the more common focus on the road-facing side, especially given the cost and labor involved in such decoration. The tesserae are arranged in symmetrical, carpet-like panels. On the back wall, the central motif features four tulip-like shapes radiating outward, bordered by interlocking rhombuses, circles, and other geometric forms. These may serve as simple ornament, or may be read through the lens of Romanian folk symbolism. Tulip motifs often represent fertility or spring, circles may evoke cosmic cycles, rhombuses can signify the sky or the universe. A solar rosette appears in the lower right panel, rendered in light blue within a yellow circle and framed by blue and red squares, suggesting Dacian solar symbolism. Along the roof edge, blue, red, and yellow mosaics are arranged in vertical bands that reflect Moldova’s national colors. The structure shows signs of gradual decay. Although the mosaics once covered the entire shelter, large portions have been lost from the front walls, and the back is beginning to deteriorate as well. The variety of colors and relative simplicity of the patterns do not make it an especially remarkable piece of decorative art, though certain elements remain distinct and unusual.
