Bus Stop - Beriozchi
Unknown — 1980s?
Description
This Soviet-era bus stop in Beriozchi features a simple, utilitarian concrete shell with a flat cantilevered roof. Cast concrete appears to be the primary construction material; the roof looks to simply be a single panel taken directly from a panel housing factory. Small glass or ceramic tesserae are embedded directly into a mortar base, with small grout lines contributing to the richness of the yellow and red patterns: the background is filled in uniformly with yellow tiles, serving to heighten contrast and unify the composition. The style is abstract. The internal facade's patterns are nearly surrealist, while those of the side appear cubist or inspired by Wassily Kavinsky. This leads me to believe the shelter was built in the 1980s, when the avant-garde elements of the early years of the USSR resurged. It's difficult to interpret all the motifs, though it appears that plants and flowers line the bottom and top right of the back panel as well as the sides. Viewed from the front, the orange motifs could be trees, though the figure on the back wall resembled a large bird. I believe there's corn or perhaps a stalk of wheat on the side panel - common symbols in Moldova, as an agricultural republic. The exterior side wall features a vertical arrangement of geometric forms: hexagons, arrows, stylized leaves, and segmented bars rendered in shades of red, orange, and yellow, with elements of blue, green, white, and brown tiles punctuating the backroad to anchor motifs. Tile dimensions and color uniformity suggest factory production rather than hand-cut pieces. There is visible degradation: missing mosaic sections, particularly on the interior wall and the vertical slab; staining from water runoff; and overgrown vegetation at the entrance. Patches of white paint attempt to repair or cover the removed mosaic sections.
