Bus Stop - Beloci Sovetskaya

Unknown1960s-1980s

Description

A concrete shelter on rounded piers under a flat slab, mosaics covering the interior walls from edge to edge in mosaic. The tesserae are factory-made, worked into a symmetrical composition of scrolling foliage and flowering stems in blues, reds, and greens. A blue metal sign mounted on the roof reads БЕЛОЧИ (Belochi), the village name in Russian. The mosaic is intact but dirty. The man on the bench says he helped renovate the Soviet bus stop in the early 90s, and that municipal workers repaint the bus stops every few years. This would explain the many white-painted shelters along the main road in Northern Transnistria. Fortunately, these mosaics haven’t been painted over like some of the other stops.
