Valea Morilor Park
Robert Kurtz; David Palatnik — 1954
Description
A colonnaded propylaea modelled on the entrance to an ancient temple marks the main approach to Valea Monitor Park on Alexei Mateevici Street, designed by David Palatnic and completed in 1954. The top register of the colonnade walls was originally decorated with mosaics depicting athletic scenes. Behind the entrance, the park was equipped with a 5,000-seat open-air theatre, a matinee cinema (since demolished), a parachute tower open to the public, and a parachuting club with trained instructors. The frozen lake served as a municipal skating rink in winter and as a rowing and water sports facility in summer. The MoldExpo Centre, formerly the Moldavian SSR Exhibition of Achievements in National Economy, stands adjacent to the park.
