Sgraffito - Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning
V. Bessonov (architect) — 1980
Description
Sgraffito nearby the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning in Chișinău, I believe behind the main faculty building. This is a really wild piece, and I’m left guessing why it’s been included here – or what it represents. The panel features three central images, each with two vertical figures: four smaller child-like or angelic figures on a column flanking the central figures. Each set of figures faces each other, creating the perception that they’re looking straight at you. However, the different clothing of each of the central figures, and the smooth versus the armor, scales or feathers of the smaller figures on the right point to them being two separate individuals. The two left smaller figures appear to hold a bow. Except or the sunflowers between the three columns (don’t miss the face on the top left), the background is filled with geometric patterns arranged in horizontal bands. Assuming they’re representing traditional Romanian folk sewing patterns, I spot diamonds (fertility), perhaps wolf fangs (guide into the dark), the square wheel (peace), and leaves (vitality) – though they don’t represent the patterns I’ve seen elsewhere in Romania, and it also has some fish on the right and what appear to be two peacocks in the centre left. The whole ensemble is executed in a limited palette of brick red, cream, and pale gray. Sections of plaster are falling down, especially I the bottom right, but much of the surface remains intact. I’m at a loss what this is meant to resemble. Sgraffito nearby the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning in Chișinău, I believe behind the main faculty building.
