National Book Chamber of the Republic of Moldova (former Publishing House)
Gennadiy Zhinkin — 1980
Description
The facade is one of the first in Chișinău to use a full-width brise-soleil across an entire elevation, a prefabricated concrete screen set slightly off from the building behind it, its seams still visible today. The exterior blocks are rendered in a coarse material to contrast with the window surfaces, and the asymmetrical interlacing of the building's volumes gives the composition an irregular, stepped profile along the boulevard. The lobby was designed as a public space in its own right: two halls for inter-city calls and customer service were reached by staircases set above the ground floor, positioned so that people waiting for their calls could look out onto the boulevard below. A mosaic on the Tighina Street facade depicting telephony as a symbol of global communication completes the building's program. The House of the Press and the National Bank both later adopted the same brise-soleil approach.
