Mural - "Ideology, Cosmos and Science" Technical University of Moldova (UTM) - Chisinau
Unknown — 1974
Description
The mural “Cosmos” (likely name) on the facade of one of the Technical University of Moldova (UTM) pavilions in Chișinău presents dynamic, abstracted figures integrated into angular forms. The left side shows a woman holding a child. A male figure appears in flight in the centre, likely alluding to the cosmic imagery of the 1960s and beyond. A third figure on horseback completes the composition on the right. The composition uses a palette of cream, ochre, rust red, green, and black, with strong graphic lines painted on ceramic tiles. According to the Socialist Modernist project by Bureau for Art and Urban Research (BACU), the mural was part of a triptych created for the university's three pavilion facades, reflecting the thematic trilogy of Ideology, Cosmos, and Science. Two of the original three murals were partially lost due to thermal insulation cladding during unregulated renovations. In response, applications were submitted in 2020 to Moldova's Ministry of Culture and to Chișinău City Hall for the protection of the UTM complex and its monumental artworks by including them in the historical monuments registry and recognizing their cultural value. Upon visiting in January 2023, it seemed like recent artwork had replaced the other murals – only this one remains.
