Mosaic - "Muses" House of Culture - Popenki
Unknown — Socialist Modernist
Description
The mosaic Muses decorates the facade of the House of Culture in the village of Popenki, Transnistria. The vertical panel shows three standing female figures in long, striped robes reminiscent of classical drapery. Each holds an emblem of the arts: the left figure carries an open book, the central figure raises a theatrical mask, and the right figure holds a violin. Above them, a stylized sun radiates concentric circles and linear rays in yellow and red tones. Its placement on the main facade of the Palace of Culture underlines the role of the building, presenting the muses as guardians of education, theater, and music. Abstract geometric fragments in muted shades of grey, ochre, brown, and white, arranged in irregular vertical clusters set a rather earie and dreamlike backdrop. The alternating lighter and dark blue tesserae in the folders of the robes contrast beautifully with the cream and white dresses and give the muses a shimmering quality. The uniform tesserae are almost certainly factory-made. Integrated into the plastered surface of the building. Set against a muted brown plaster, the mosaics are tightly packed, though there is ample spacing between the depictions of the muses and the backgrounds in mosaics, making the muses pop out more. While the work remains intact and legible, minor fading and surface wear are visible.
