Mosaic - Moldavkabel Plant - Bender
Unknown — 1980s
Description
This fantastic mosaic of the Moldavkabel plant in Bender, created in the 1980s, spans the upper portion of the building in a continuous band. Four large circular medallions are integrated into a pattern that is meant to represent cable coils, rendered in arcs of yellow, gold, white, and pale grey tesserae. Each medallion presents a distinct episode, which together with its size and symbolism make it one of my favorite mosaics in Moldova. The first shows design bureau employees gathered around a large blueprint, one figure holding a rolled technical drawing. The second medallion displays factory workers in a production workshop, standing near mechanical equipment and interacting with tools and components. The third features a family (two adults and a child) framed by doves in flight and a building windows and some kind of column on their left. The fourth shows workers presenting finished cable spools, with the woman holding the USSR state quality mark (a downward ‘K’ for качество/ kachestvo set below the USSR/СССР). The palette includes muted ochres, reds, and browns, with blue, white, and burgundy in vertical compositons making out the background. The technical execution combines fine grout lines with dense placement of uniformly cut tesserae. Despite exposure, the mosaic appears in good condition, with little visible damage or discoloration.
