Mosaic - Bread Factory - Chisinau
Unknown — Socialist Modernist
Description
This mosaic is mounted on the side wall of a (former?) bread factory. The mosaic is framed by four vertical heads of wheat, partially covered by the ribbon showing a Moldovan dance – almost certainly the hora – with alternating men and women, dressed in traditional clothing, hold hands. In the middle of the ribbon are two large circles representing a flower - perhaps a sunflower - with a sun displayed in the central top part of the façade, above the ribbon. Hora is a traditional dance from Romania and the Republic of Moldova that gathers everyone in a large circle. The dancers hold hands and take three steps back and forth with a beat, turning the circle counterclockwise. The dance is accompanied by specific Romanian instruments. It’s performed during traditional holidays. The tesserae are ceramic and industrially made out of muted browns, beiges and yellow – like wheat and bread. The mosaics are raised, providing additional debt. The mosaic isn’t in a bad shape, though it’ increasingly obscured by the trees.
