In 1980, the Opera and Ballet Theater moved into a new, purpose-built facility on Stefan cel Mare Boulevard, where A.Gorshkov and N. Kurennoy designed the building. The facade and the interior were decorated with sculptures by B.Novikov, B.Dubrovin, G.Dubrovin, and N.Sazhin. In May 2012, the Government of Moldova took a decision to name the National Theater of Opera and Ballet after Maria Biesu, Moldova’s famous opera singer. Until her death in 2012, they had been the patron of the “Maria Biesu Invites,” an International Festival of Opera and Ballet, held annually at the Theater since 1990. When the national theatre opened, Moldova didn't have it's The Chişinău National Opera, the national opera company of Moldova, was founded in the mid-1940s and became a professional company in 1956. When the original building opened in 1957, Moldova didn't even have its own theater troupe, gaining one only in 1957 after the artists returned from training in Leningrad. Following the collapse of the USSR, the company is one of the few ex-Soviet opera companies to retain its own orchestra, chorus, soloists and ballet company. The bill was passed today, January 18, by members of Parliament. The initiative belongs to the Ministry of Culture and was supported by 59 MPs, according to deschide.md. The mosaic, named “Art,” dates back to 1974. Its total area is about 230 square meters. It was previously located on the facade of the former Trade Union Palace of Culture on Kiev Street. Between 2020 and 2022, it was restored and moved to the facade of the auxiliary building of the Maria Beshu National Opera and Ballet Theater.
