Hotel National (former Inturist Hotel)
Vladimir Shalaginov; Adolf Gorbuntsov — 1978
Description
Seventeen storeys tall at the intersection of Ștefan cel Mare and Negruzzi Boulevards, the National Hotel was completed in 1978 by Vladimir Shaloginov and Adolf Gorburtsov after four years of construction. The tower's facade is organised into a regular grid of horizontal window banding. At the base, the restaurant occupies a detached volume connected to the main tower, with a fountain placed between the building and the boulevard. The hotel operated within the Intourist network, which ran approximately 4,500 hotels across the USSR, and Moldova had around 45 of them. In Chișinău, the hotel catered almost exclusively to party members and official visitors attending events and conferences. It housed a Berioza shop, the only outlet in the city accepting foreign currency, alongside a hairdresser's salon and a luggage post. During the transition period the hotel lost most of its business and was privatised in 2006. The building is currently in a deteriorated state.
