Faculties of Biology and Soil Science and of Foreign Languages

UnknownSocialist Modernist

Description

A five-storey teaching block on the Moldova State University campus in Chișinău, housing the Faculty of Letters and the Faculty of Biology and Soil Sciences. The building presents the standard Soviet institutional slab typology of the 1960s–70s: a long, horizontal facade in pale stone-clad render with regular punched windows, a flat roofline, and a slightly projecting entrance bay. Moldova State University was founded on 1 October 1946 as Chișinău State University, initially enrolling 320 students across five faculties: Physics and Mathematics, Geology and Pedology, History and Philology, Biology, and Chemistry. The Faculty of Letters emerged from that founding History and Philology faculty as the institution expanded. Biology and Soil Sciences similarly traces its lineage directly to the university's 1946 foundation, making this building home to two of Moldova's oldest continuously operating academic departments.
